About Obsidian Press
Our Story
Obsidian Press was founded by historian and author Dr. Mark Bowles to publish distinctive books that might not easily find a home in traditional publishing. After writing and publishing numerous works of his own—including award-winning histories of NASA—Dr. Bowles created the press to support unusual ideas and compelling voices.
Working closely with authors in the United States and Europe, Obsidian Press develops manuscripts through a collaborative editorial process. Its European office in Berlin, Germany, headed by Marie Adamaki, helps extend this work internationally, bringing thoughtful and unconventional books to readers on both sides of the Atlantic.
Our Philosophy
At Obsidian Press, we believe that the most interesting books are often those that fall outside conventional publishing categories. Our goal is to work closely with authors to develop distinctive projects that combine creativity and intellectual rigor with compelling storytelling.
Independent publishing allows us to collaborate directly with writers, shaping manuscripts thoughtfully and bringing them to readers without the long delays and constraints of traditional publishing. Each book we publish is selected carefully and developed in partnership with the author, with the aim of producing work that is both meaningful and enduring.
Working with Authors
Obsidian Press works closely with authors throughout the publishing process. Some writers arrive with a finished manuscript ready for production, while others seek guidance with editing, research, design, or publishing strategy. We conform to the author’s needs.
Because every book is different, we approach each project as a collaboration. Authors may choose the level of support that best fits their goals—from basic publication and global distribution to deeper editorial development and design assistance.
Obsidian Press can make books available worldwide without requiring authors to purchase inventory in advance. This allows us to focus on what matters most: developing meaningful manuscripts and bringing them thoughtfully into print.
